Where do sessions take place?
We bring music therapy to you! Sessions can be held in your home, at school, in a care facility, or virtually through telehealth. If needed, we can also arrange a neutral location through one of our trusted partner sites.
Can sessions be done virtually through telehealth?
Yes! Virtual sessions via secure telehealth make music therapy accessible for clients across Missouri, allowing the same personalized, goal-driven experience from the comfort of home.
Where is your service area?
PNMT provides music therapy services to clients in Jefferson County, as well as most areas of St. Louis County and St. Louis City.
What is the frequency and duration of sessions?
The length of sessions depends on the needs of each individual client or group. Typically:
- Individual Sessions: Range from 30 to 60 minutes.
- Group Sessions: Range from 45 to 60 minutes.
Sessions are generally scheduled on a weekly or biweekly basis, depending on your needs. Recommendations for the frequency and duration of sessions will be made following an initial assessment with your therapist.
Will insurance cover sessions?
Currently, music therapy is only a covered service for foster and adopted children through Medicaid’s Show Me Healthy Kids program. We are thrilled to support our community with this initiative, which was just approved in 2024!

This new coverage for foster children marks a significant step toward broader insurance coverage for music therapy. We are optimistic that music therapy will soon be covered by insurance for everyone. How much does a session cost?
Session rates can vary based on a few factors, including any available funding. Give us a call — we’re happy to chat and provide details tailored to your needs.
Are there funding or financial assistance options?
In certain instances, funding is available based on the client’s zip code and specific diagnosis. Please reach out to us to see what options may be available to you.
Is music therapy more than just playing music?
Yes! Music therapy is a clinical practice led by a board-certified music therapist, using music intentionally to support each client’s goals—like improving communication, social skills, emotional regulation, or cognitive functioning. Every activity is purposeful, helping clients grow, learn, and thrive.
What type of instruments are used in sessions?
At PNMT, we tailor your therapy experience to your music preferences, which means you can expect a diverse range of instruments. This may include guitar, piano, percussion, and more!
Do I need to know how to play an instrument?
Not at all! In fact, most of our clients do not know how to play an instrument. Regardless of age or ability level, we help everyone find a way to engage with music. Some clients enjoy listening to their therapist play and sing, others love to dance or sing along, and many like to play the instruments we bring to the session. If a client already knows how to play an instrument or wants to learn, we can certainly incorporate that into our sessions.
What kind of goals can be achieved through music therapy?
Music therapy can support a wide range of goals depending on each client’s needs. Common goals include:
Boosting confidence, self-expression, and creativity
Improving communication and language skills
Building social and interpersonal skills
Enhancing emotional regulation and coping strategies
Supporting cognitive development and memory
Encouraging physical coordination and motor skills
How will I know how my child/loved one is progressing?
Our music therapists take progress notes after every session, which can be shared with parents, caregivers, or social workers upon request. Verbal check-ins after sessions are also typical, allowing families and caregivers to stay informed about progress and next steps.
Who will my music therapist be?
We’re proud to have a diverse team of board-certified music therapists, each bringing unique backgrounds and perspectives. You’re welcome to request your preferred therapist, and we’ll do our best to accommodate your choice. If you’re unsure which team member would be the best fit for you, feel free to reach out to us, and we’ll help you find the perfect match!
How do you ensure sessions are safe and comfortable?
All of our therapists are registered with the Family Care Registry and have clean background checks, which can be provided upon request. Parents and caregivers are always welcome to participate in sessions if it benefits the client. In many cases, caregivers can stay nearby—listening or observing—without being fully present, ensuring both comfort and a supportive environment.
Are sessions appropriate for all ages and abilities?
Yes! Music therapy is designed to meet the needs of clients of all ages and abilities—from children and teens to adults and older adults.
Do you offer group music therapy sessions or special programs?
Typically, we don’t run our own ongoing public groups. However, we provide music therapy in group settings at schools, care facilities, and other partner organizations, allowing clients to benefit from social interaction and collaborative activities. Occasionally, we may offer special programs, such as a summer series, to provide additional opportunities for clients to engage in group music therapy.
What does it mean to be a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC)?
A board-certified music therapist has completed specialized education, clinical training, and a national exam to provide safe, effective, and personalized therapy. This ensures every session uses music intentionally to support growth, learning, and overall well-being.
How do I know if music therapy is right for me or a loved one?
Music therapy can improve a wide variety of healthcare and educational goals. Send us an email or give us a call, and we’ll be happy to walk you through how music therapy can address your specific needs.
